WAVE PTX Support
SmartPTT PLUS supports integration with WAVE PTX, a broadband communication solution from Motorola Solutions.
On the diagram, MOTOTRBO LMR is a NAI capable MOTOTRBO radio system. It might be IP Site Connect, Capacity Plus, or Capacity Max. Integration with MOTOTRBO Connect Plus is not supported.
With the integration, SmartPTT operators will be able to perform voice communication with WAVE users, track their presence and GPS location. Also, SmartPTT logs all those data, provides the ability to create reports as well as configure Rules and Alerts.
Features§
SmartPTT offers two types of functionality when integrates with WAVE PTX:
Please find them below.
Basic§
WAVE users support. Includes the support of relevant devices that are TLK devices, Evolve, Android and iOS smartphones. The devices may have native WAVE application or downloaded WAVE PTX application.
Additionally, SmartPTT supports WAVE users who use MOTOTRBO Ion, a dual mode device from Motorola Solutions. Ion supports the ability to operate in LMR mode (communicate over radio channels, like subscriber radios) and in LTE mode (communicate over broadband networks like LTE, 3G, Wi-Fi).
WAVE-only mode. You can configure a solution where SmartPTT will be used for WAVE users only, without MOTOTRBO radio subscribers. For that, you need only an element of MOTOTRBO system where NAI Voice Gateway is placed (master repeater or Capacity Max System Server).
Voice calls and seamless voice. Includes the ability to receive voice from WAVE users and transmit voice to them. Both group calls and private calls are supported. For voice receive/transmit, MOTOTRBO repeater is required. For details, read this article.
Seamless voice is the functionality available only in MOTOTRO Ion. When Ion switches between LMR and LTE modes, it keeps transmitting voice without interruptions. This is similar to roaming between RF sites for radio subscribers.
Presence updates. Presence updates means the ability to receive information about WAVE user online/offline status. Includes the ability to receive presence updates for WAVE users. For MOTOTRBO Ion uses, this includes the ability to receive presence updates from both LMR and broadband channels.
GPS location and seamless locate. Includes the ability to set GPS triggers for WAVE users and receive GPS location updates from them. Also, this includes the ability to visualize WAVE user location on various GPS maps (Google, OSM, and more).
Seamless locate is the functionality available only in MOTOTRO Ion. When Ion switches between LMR and LTE modes, it keeps providing location updates over RF channels or broadband network.
Value-Added§
Voice Recording. The functionality is based on the ability to do voice communications with WAVE users. For better experience, we recommend you enable Secure Voice Logging with centralized voice loggings, their integration with centralized and per-console Event Logs, and fine permissions.
GPS Tracking. The functionality is based on the ability to receive GPS location of WAVE users. Tracking includes the ability to visualize WAVE user track on the map, change its length. For Ion users, it is possible to select if visualized data must be related to LMR mode only, LTE mode only, or needs to be combined.
Rules and alerts. The functionality is based on the ability to receive voice and data from WAVE users. Depending on event type, WAVE user, and some other parameters, SmartPTT can transmit Alert Tones, text messages, notify operator, and execute other automated actions.
Reporting. The functionality is based on the ability to store information about voice and data calls with WAVE users. SmartPTT can create various reports on user activity, presence, location, and more.
Mobile subscribers. SmartPTT is able to integrate SmartPTT mobile subscribers with WAVE users. This provides additional flexibility to the solution design.

Prerequisites§
To learn the SmartPTT configuration prerequisites, read this article.
Setup§
To learn how to integrate WAVE PTX into SmartPTT, read the following articles:
- Setting Up UGW Connection
- Linking UGW to MOTOTRBO System
- Mapping WAVE IDs to Radio IDs
- Setting Up Centralized GPS Triggers
Also, you should configure per-operator permissions and restrictions to determine their access to specific WAVE users, talkgroups, and MOTOTRBO/WAVE system capabilities. If required, you must do that in the Profiles tab of the Configurator. For more information on profiles, read this article
Operation Notes§
Limitations§
All the limitations below are due to external restrictions:
- SmartPTT does not support direct voice receive and transmit from the WAVE OnCloud.
- SmartPTT does not support private calls monitoring between WAVE users. This is important for WAVE Only Mode.
- SmartPTT does not support radio commands from/to WAVE users. The only exception is MOTOTRBO Ion in LMR mode.
- SmartPTT does not support text messages with WAVE users.
